Draycote Fly-Fishers Association

Newsletter - Autumn 2018

The 2018 season is drawing to a close (the season ends on Friday November 30th, so another couple of months left),

Unfortunately I have not been able to fish at Draycote much this season, but I have been following your successes on the web site, and it seems that after a rather difficult summer the catch returns have been creeping up, with some anglers recording some remarkable catches. Let's hope this continues through to the end of the season.

Draycote Fly Fishing Association Charity Match in Aid of Help for Heroes

On 4th May the Draycote Fly Fishing Association held a charity fishing match in order to raise funds for the charity 'Help for Heroes'.

12 Boats, 24 anglers set off form the jetty at 09:00 in a light breeze and bright conditions interspersed with some cloud.

The event was supported by The Alex Booth fly fishing club and The Police Trout Fishing section alongside members of the Draycote Fly Fishing Association.

The rules of the competition were 2 fish then C&R with all other fish counting as 2lb.

After 8.5 hours of an excellent days fishing on a gorgeous spring day, the results of the day were as follows:

1st Place –  Chris Hawkins & Roger Symons  (54 fish to the boat)

2nd Place  -  Yusef Dar – Alex  (38 fish to the boat)

3rd Place  -  Jason Sly & Mark Johnson-Jones  (29 fish to the boat)

4th Place  -  Kevin Pearson & Garrick Stafford

5th Place  - Mike Smith & Steve Tritt

The first five boats chose a prize for their efforts before the group retired to The Dunchurch Social Club for some much needed refreshments and an excellent buffet, laid on by the managers Tina and Tony.

In total £585.00 was raised on the day and thanks goes to all who took part and were in some way involved from the members of the Draycote Fly Fishing Association.

Many thanks to Paul Farrell, the instigator and energy behind this worthy cause.

The Autumn bank Pairs.

The Autumn Bank Pairs match took place on Sunday 16th September, and 4 pairs of members fished for the Draycote Shield. Unlike some of the boats who were catching enough trout to fill a Brixham trawler, the members found the fishing hard going from the bank, despite the conditions being reasonable. Still Paul Farrell and BJ Hunt (for the second year) managed a creditable 5 fish to take the trophy.

The winter programme

I hope you will all join us for the winter meetings. We still have to finalize all of the speakers as yet, but we hope to confirm them at the AGM.

Many of the speakers we have approached now ask for £150 plus expenses to speak at our meetings, and we could not afford to pay for three speakers during the forthcoming winter if they asked for that amount. We have been very fortunate in the past because most of the speakers have asked for a donation to a charity.

Therefore, due to the difficulty in securing speakers, and the fact that the season does not finish until the end of November, it has been agreed that we will not hold a meeting in October.

November 13th     AGM and time to pay your subscriptions

December 11h     Speaker to be confirmed

January 8th     Speaker to be confirmed

February 12th     Speaker to be confirmed

March 12th       Presentation evening with buffet, and an auction of fishing tackle, etc.

We are finding it more and more difficult to book interesting speakers. If you can think of

anyone that would be suitable, please advise one of the committee members.

The secretary

And last but by a very large margin not least.

After 12 years of unstinting service, our secretary Graham feels it is time to step down and

Allow someone else to take over the mantle of Secretary of the DFFA. Graham will be

Be submitting his resignation at the AGM, and we will be asking for a replacement from the

I am sure that you will all want to thank Graham for all the hard work that he has put into

The club.

Big fish

Don't forget, if you have caught a big fish (brown or rainbow) or a heavy limit, and want to

enter them for one of the cups, please ensure you enter the competition by completing a

form, and hand it to any committee member

If anyone has an email address and have not already advised me of it (or have a new one) please drop me a line at

It is very convenient and saves on postage and telephone calls.

Alternatively, if you do not have an Email address, but have a mobile phone I can keep you informed about forthcoming events. If you want me to do this please send me a text requesting it to 07500134522
